世界上影響人類最大的是母親。

如果問：世界上最偉大的佈道家是甚麼人？答案應該是母親。最偉大的聖經教師，也該歸於母親。

保羅該算是新約教會的偉大使徒了。他引導很多人信主；但他寫給提摩太的信中說：

想到你心裏無偽之信，這信是先在你外祖母羅以和你母
親友尼基心裏的，我深信也在你的心裏。（提後一：5）

這是說，提摩太信心的根基，是他的母親和外祖母羅以先立的根基，保羅在上面建造。保羅，這位偉大的教師，說到提摩太對聖經的認識的重要：“從小明白聖經”的來源，顯然是由於母親的教導。保羅說：

你所學習，所確信的，要存在心裏；因為你知道是跟誰
學的，並且知道你從小明白聖經；這聖經能使你因信基
督耶穌有得救的智慧。（提後三：14-15）

母親帶兒女到世上來的，也該帶他們到天上去。能把聖經存在兒女的心裏，是給兒女最寶貴的遺產；以為聖經“教導我們生活的道路，也教導我們如何死。”

美國最受人民敬愛的林肯總統，被稱為“誠實的亞伯”（Abraham Lincoln）。雖然他家庭貧窮，所受正式教育有限，卻有極輝煌的成就。他到生命的最後才成為基督徒，品德卻是深受聖經影響，因為是母親在膝上教導他的。林肯說：“有一位敬虔的母親，沒有誰能算是貧窮。”

歷代志中列王，每記載他們的母親是誰。聖經裏一般甚少記錄女人的名字；這項記載，表示母親影響兒子性格的塑造，因而影響全國：良母會產生好王，並引導全國向善；惡母會產生壞王，也由民入罪。

家庭是社會的基本單位；母親是家庭的中心。

同樣的，教會也注重良母的重要：“作監督的，必須無可指責，只作一個婦人的丈夫…人若不知道管理自己的家，焉能照管神的教會呢？”（提前三：2，5）。如果夫婦不和，帶領教會必然甚為困難。

約翰.衛斯理（John Wesley,1703-1791）領袖英國的復興，因為有一位敬虔的母親蘇散娜（Susanna），每天為所有十一個孩子們提名禱告，並且輪流個別輔導。所以孩子們長成都很敬虔，三名男孩子為教牧。

美國詩人摩理斯，有一首詩，從一本古老的聖經，想到他母親對家庭的影響：

現在，這書是唯一留下給我的，—
眼淚不禁開始傾流，—
用抖顫的嘴脣和震動的眉梢
我把它緊壓在我的心頭。
這裏是我們家譜系的樹
許多代都已度過；

啊！我清楚的記得
這些人的名字寫在上面；
在晚上的禱告過後，
全家時常一同圍在爐邊，
談論着那書葉所說的

現在他們都已靜默死亡，

可憐的母親看來那麼寧靜，

華勒斯的詩，則敘述母親對世界的影響：“那推動搖籃的手，也掌管着世界。”這是真實的。不過，其影響有時會是負面的。

盼望今天的基督徒母親們，看重孩子的靈魂，不要把下一代造成有技巧而沒有品德的人。我們知道“不學有術”比不學無術還可怕；那麼，沒有品德，沒有靈命而有術的人，更不是社會和人類之福。

我們記念母親節，要為母親們禱告，願所有敬虔的母親，都能夠像羅以和友尼基一樣，在真理上教導孩子們。
